The technician was Chris McVeigh. What a star! Explained everything he was doing (and why). Listed the potential things that might be needed to repair a non-functioning door opener. After diagnosing the problem he told me what each possible change would cost. It turned out that he was able to fix things inexpensively and also did some preventive maintenance.
